Working with the people who use the system.

I work part-time with GSD London, a painting and decorating contractor, on its internal client management platform. My contributions help bring clients, quotes, and jobs into a connected system.

This work gives me a different perspective from running my own products: understanding an existing company’s processes, contributing within an established platform, and making changes that support everyday operations.

Understand the work before changing it.

Spreadsheets and chat threads are useful starting points, but information becomes difficult to follow as work moves between clients, quotes, and jobs. A person needs the relevant history and context to understand what happens next.

The engineering work starts with understanding those relationships and the people responsible for them. The interface and data model need to follow the business workflow.

The choices behind the product.

01

Connect the records that belong together

I contribute features that bring client, quote, and job information into the same platform. The aim is to make the surrounding context available where someone is doing the work.

02

Use a shared application and data stack

The platform uses Next.js and Supabase with PostgreSQL. My work spans the web interface and the data it needs, rather than treating each screen as an isolated feature.

03

Expose useful operations through MCP

I am helping expose the platform through a Model Context Protocol server so an assistant can work with live client and job context. Examples include retrieving a client’s history or preparing a quote from chat.

Learning through the work.

This is ongoing internal-platform work. As a part-time contributor, I help develop features across the web interface and the data that supports it.

It has reinforced the value of learning the business language before deciding how to represent a process in software. A useful feature should make the next step clearer to the person using it.
